No, I do not speak Indian

Rohan.

While I was born in raised in America, I often get asked if I speak Indian. India is culturally rich and diverse, with 22 different languages (Hindi being the main one). I actually can speak and understand Gujarati, which is the mother tongue of my parents’ home state of Gujarat (also where Ghandi is from). While I speak English with my parents, I was able to learn this second language as a child through grandparents. History classrooms in America often cover American and European history but do a poor job of educating on the cultural backdrops in the East, leading to a lack of awareness of all that’s out in the world.
