Please: Hispanic is not a race

Mark Wood-Caballero
Tempe, AZ

I can’t fully determine what races I have in my heritage. My father, born in Baltimore, was a white anglo-saxon. My mother was born in Peru of Spanish and Incan descent, but with German and English ancestors. I grew up in Mexico as a US Citizen and now live in the US. I proudly identify my ethnicity as Hispanic, but refuse to mark any one “race box”. I believe that it doesn’t speak well of the US, despite its long history of diversity, that many persons still think that Hispanic (or Mexican, for that matter) refer to race.
