Like most conflictsusceptible, resolution begins with simple communication. Both sides of the racial divide are often too willing to disregard the other perspective of the other side. We need to work to acknowledge the merits of all peoples speech- regardless of color or background. Everyone can contribute to this conversation.

Do you hate your other side?

This is what my father asked me when we were talking about the movie “12 Years a Slave”. He was talking about the horrors of slavery and the actual statement was: “I bet that makes you hate your white side, doesn’t it!?” I’m sure he doesn’t know the effects or the implications of his words and that he meant no harm but I knew that a part of him believes that there’s a part of me I should hate because my mother, his ex-wife, is white. These are some of the unenlightened statements and belief’s about race that I heard the most growing up.
