Taught that race: most important trait.

Marni Berendsen,
Walnut Creek, CA

I grew up in a town (and neighborhood) in CA that had a mixture of ethnicities. I didn’t know “color” was supposed to make a difference until I was about 12. I’m white. I’m 70. Over the years, it seemed that race become the most important trait that one was supposed to notice (or determine) about a person. I learned it really told me very little about the person except the strong possibility of a shared long history of discrimination and abuse. Which IS important to know, discuss and understand. And ask about.
