As a white woman, I’m learning to recognize my privilege, especially since I married a black man and we have 3 biracial children (and he has 2 other biracial children). I plan to teach them both sides of their culture. Since they are still young, our main lesson is “treat others the way you want to be treated” or, The Golden Rule. Such a simple thought really, yet so hard for individuals to practice when they are also taught to judge on things like skin color or sexual preference. It’s not about not seeing color, rather seeing the injustice others experience and thinking, is this how I would want to be treated? If the answer is no, then it’s time for a change.
