For me, and maybe also for Rich Ford, race isn’t primarily about people’s interpersonal interactions but about big structural processes, that explain why jobs, housing, health care, wealth (WHOA that’s a big one), education, incarceration, infant mortality and just about everything else is distributed massively along racial lines. Those disparities reproduce themselves through the generations automatically, like the kudzu that grows so ubiquitously in the South. I’m hoping you start to talk about THAT version of race.
