Try getting to know me first

Sharina Stepney.

I’m originally from New York & moved to Va for the first time when I was 9 years old. I was not liked because I had long hair & was from the North. This was all new to me. I was in elementary school. Then when I hit junior high, I didn’t live in the same area or grow up with the children I was in school with, so there were always rumors about me. Nobody takes the time to get to know me or who I am but there are always perceptions about who I am. It makes it hard to have friends or be yourself when you constantly have to worry about how you will be perceived. I’m from New York, but my family is originally from the South. I often get asked if I have Indian in me because I have “good hair.” So there is also the stereotype because African Americans can’t have a good texture of hair without being mixed with something else. Again, perception. We should try to get to know one another before we judge or assume anything about them. education & knowledge make a difference.
