Well educated Asian-Americans asked, speak English?

I was at a National Convention for my sorority, which is an Asian- American Interest sorority. A number of us had gotten onto the elevator at our hotel. There were girls from the University of Virginia, Berkeley, Standford, Cornell, and Carnegie Melon. At the next floor a group of older Caucasian women stepped onto the elevator. They looked at all of us and the first thing that came out of their mouths was – “Do you all speak English?” REALLY! We were all well educated women from highly ranked universities but THAT was the first thing we were asked.
