My whole life no one ever just wanted to know what my background is, they just assume and while having a conversation it would be mentioned some how what they thought I was and I would have to correct them which always led to the “Oh wow really!”. I have always been proud of being a mix of Puerto Rican, Guyanese Indian , and Cherokee Indian but when you don’t look like any of them you never seem to fit in because you are part of so many categories. I still get affected by how in middle school people were fascinated by my hair and would just touch it and say I have never seen someone like you with hair like this before. A lot people would say wow your hair is actually really nice and soft I thought you were black and white so I thought it would be different. That would bother me because no one knew what my family history was and I was proud of it so don’t assume, ask. I try to teach the people around me to be open minded about not connecting looks to an ethnicity because my cousin and I are the same yet I am very tan and she is white. There is no one look per region of origin.
