I grew up in a predominately white part of NJ, and went to school in Philadelphia, PA. Upon taking my first job at a manufacturing plant in Richmond, VA, I worked with a production supervisor who was black, and always addressed me as “sir”, and when I first heard that it was jarring. He was 20+ years my senior and had a wealth of knowledge on the process and equipment that I wanted to learn from, but for the first couple months, the only real answers I got from him were “yes, sir” / “no, sir”. I think I finally understand where this was coming from.
