Why do you talk like that?

Nyleja Rose.

Once my parents got divorced I moved into the inner city with my mother. I never knew there was something wrong with the way I talked until I transferred to my new school for 3rd grade. People would say, ” you talk white.” or “talk black.” Apparently since I talked “proper” I was considered an oreo. I never understood how I could be separated from my own people because I did not talk the way they desired. Now that I am grown, I wish I knew how to articulate better my feelings/thoughts. I wish there wasn’t a stereotype against black people for talking “proper.”
