It’s rare that I travel to Richmond for work, but this one occasion I did. I was finishing up a meet and greet with a coworker from the WC office and this person asked what mine and my colleagues’ lunch plans were. I had mentioned that we were just going to go to the common area and meet with the team to decide. This individual recommended that we go to the food court in WC 3/4 because “your people’s food is served there.” Not sure who “my people were” I proceeded to ask if poutine was on the menu, because I would be interested in trying an American take on a Canadian dish (the cheese curds make it). This individual proceeded to say “Oh no, that’s were all the Indian food is.” I informed them that I am Canadian, and while my ethnicity may be South Asian, I identify myself as a Canadian. This individual did not know how to respond to me, so they turned to my colleague said “maybe you’ll enjoy your people’s food then, it’s really good.” only for them to respond saying they were also Canadian.
