Margaret Sieiro Garcia
Not Latinx enough for most Latinx.
What SHOULD a Garcia sound like?
To Spaniards, I’m American who is Spanish, I am included
To Brasilians, I’m American who is Brasilian, I am included
To Latinx American, I’m American, not Latinx enough to be included
To some Americans, I’m in America, speak english.
I am not enough of my heritage to be included with other Latinx here in the US. I attended a BRG events to meet other Latinx folks when I started at Capital One. When I identified myself as Spanish/Brasilian, the very first response I got was, “Well that’s not really latinx, maybe half, but that doesn’t make you Latinx.” I will never forget that. I haven’t attended another event since that.
I don’t have an accent.
I’m very pale.
I grew up in a very anglo community.
I am Latinx – I am the blend of my family and my heritage.
