You don’t have to whisper “black.”

Tracy Gray

I’ve noticed that when some people described a person as “black,” they will whisper or hesitate, as if they will offend me. It doesn’t matter if they are progressive or conservative. It doesn’t seem to occur to them that I am proud of who I am and I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t black. My blackness is a part of me and defines who I am.
