At my former job I wore my hair in braids for a year to give it a break from chemicals in order to allow it to grow. Then I got a relaxer again and an employee who hadn’t seen my hair before my braids gave me a backhanded compliment that my new hair was “more sophisticated.” I let it roll off, but I never forgot it. I still do what I want, but that microaggression was an interesting footnote.
