I speak Spanish because I am white

Justine Knudson
Boise, ID

I don’t come from a family of great social status, but as a white, native English speaker in the United States, I was born with a certain degree of power. My privilege comes from my race and native language. People in power must take action in order for social change to occur. My action was learning and speaking Spanish. Recognizing and respecting the language is an integral part of respecting the whole human. Because I was born with certain privilege, the simple act of speaking Spanish is an act of advocacy.
