I’m Dutch-Indonesian. Why do you ask?

Jessica Stagg
Heber, UT

They’re eyes widened. “How..?” someone asked awkwardly. I laughed. It was a reaction that I was so used to whenever someone asked me about my race. Maybe it was my milky-white skin that caused them to look in awe. “You look like a Dutch person, except for the eyes.. and hair..” they would say. Everyday, I look in the mirror at my brown almond eyes, my white skin, and my thick brown hair, wondering how I ended up like this. They ask about religion. What my favorite food is. I answer with something like: “I’m a Christian who loves curry.” I add a smile.
