Ireland tries to think it’s not *as* racist as elsewhere. There is much to celebrate – the highest proportion of immigrants of any European country (except a few little ones like Luxembourg) and no mainstream racist political party (see Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Hungry, Poland … the list goes on). But there are still many examples of day to day racism and institutional racism in Irish life that need to be recognized. The Irish also need to recognize their own racist history in the British Empire (eg in India), Africa, the US and Australia – and elsewhere in the world.
