Acknowledging my privilege in American society.

Danielle Morency
Ann Arbor, MI

I grew up in an upper-middle class suburban town composed of 93.4 percent white people. You could say that I had limited exposure to people of other races. While being a white person in society did provide me with certain advantages throughout my life, these were not things I was aware of before my experiences in a more diverse environment. Now that I’ve seen the different backgrounds of the people around me, I realize that my upbringing is not something I can take for granted, and that I need a better understanding of how race plays a role in our society.
