Breaking ground was my cross borne.

Alfredo Barrios Jr.
Manhattan Beach, CA

I was blessed with a lot of talent and drive, and have broken ground as a Latino in many arenas. I attended Harvard College, then Harvard Law School, then joined a prestigious law firm, then switched careers and became successful TV writer, director and producer. Early on, I resented being the Latino trophy placed on the mantle of these mostly-white and very exclusive academic and professional enclaves. But as I grew up, I realized that breaking ground wasn’t a burden, but a privilege that came with certain responsibilities I could not deny — namely, that in blazing new trails, I had to look back and help others like me get to where I was.
