So, what are you mixed with?

Ashley Butler,
Wilkesboro, NC

This is such an odd question to ask someone. However, as someone who is bi-racial, this is a question I get a lot. It’s actually one of the first things that people ask when getting to know me, especially growing up in the South. I will never understand why it matters, to be honest. Plus, the words “mixed with,” are so demeaning. I am not a recipe, I’m not “mixed with,” anything. I’m human.
