Traditional environment with non-traditional views.

Amanda Cook
Lubbock, TX

I’m an international business student at Texas Tech University, living in the second most conservative city in the United States. My views on non traditional gender roles and preferred marital status are ridiculed daily. Clearly I don’t have “southern” values. Texas Tech Student. 2013 OTC Symposium.

Have Pride in your European Heritage!

Caleb Boc Steele,
Wayne State,
Trenton, MI

I’ve seen a lot of things recently that allude to white guilt or white privilege or other things like so I’d just like to remind people to have pride in where they come from, no matter where. I think all people should have pride in their heritage and carry on their traditions and I just don’t want to see European culture die out. For instance, I’m Polish so in a millennia from now I’d like to still see Polish people wearing traditional Polish clothes doing the Polka. The same goes for all cultures. Similarly, in a millennia, I’d like to see Native Americans in traditional Native American clothes doing traditional Native American dances. Everybody has a right to their people and their culture and the only way that I know of to continue that is for people to take pride in their heritage and continue on their traditions, to me it’s just that simple.

Education is the key to change

Autumn Segrest,
Highland Heights, KY.

As a white woman from suburban America, it can be hard to understand the struggles of the countless people who were not born into whiteness. Their experiences with racism and prejudice shape their identity as much as my privilege shapes mine. But through education, whether it be traditional schooling or sharing ideas, we can fight against the oppressors of our time and blossom into a world of acceptance.

Latin mothers like white American boyfriends.

Jazelle,
San Francisco, CA.

It seems like with Latin American mothers, who comes from 1st generation parents, morph this idea that being with a white American male will bring me happiness. Traditional Mexican families that live in the US don’t evolve into the new generations, they stick to what they know; their culture and ancestral values. However, Latin American women raised by Latin American mothers are told to want better and to inhabit new values and cultural beliefs.

I love being a Latin American woman, however, I just don’t think I’m as cultured in my heritage as I’d like to be.
