Why the hyphen? American not enough?

My original thoughts when hearing about the race card project are the six words written above. Then I started to worry about putting my name on the site and what people I know might think of me. I thought about changing my six words to “Afraid to speak; am I racist?” Ultimately I went with my gut, after all I’ve had this conversation with my two best friends (Indian-American [b. NJ] and Taiwanese-American [b. Taiwan]); they disagree with me. I understand the desire for community, I just wish the community was bigger than race (or not race, don’t get me started on “Irish-American” or “Italian-American”).
