The beginning of tables turning?

Emily Scroggins,
CA.

I am white. 100% white. 50% of my friends are not white/part white. my boyfriend is not white at all. I say this to make a point that I do not discriminate, and I am not racist whatsoever. This being said, there is something that I haven’t spoken about publicly or to many people at all that bothers me. This country has come so far when it comes to equality, which is amazing and monumental. but, I ask, are the tables turning? Will whites eventually end up on the bottom instead of being equal with every other race as intended?

I see signs of it, and I know I’m not crazy… for example, in high school when my friends and I were all applying to colleges, my white friends and I would joke “oh we’re white so we wont get any financial aid, regardless of how much we make!” and my non-white friends would joke “yep I get free college cause I’m not white!”. sure, we said all this in a joking manor, but, its true. Why does race matter when determining who gets financial aid and who doesn’t? shouldn’t it be according to need? I can honestly say that I felt discriminated against, and pain when my parents came to me teary eyed one day and said “Emily, we don’t know if we can afford to send you to college, you didn’t get any financial aid.” I am not wealthy whatsoever, and my entire college costs are being paid for in loans, which I will spend my life paying off. And I watched come of my non-white friends, who were just as smart as I was, get into more prestigious schools and receive more financial aid. It’s not fair. But its not fair to anyone. People will always be discriminated against; whites, blacks, Mexicans, Asians, pacific islanders, etc. I don’t think the world will ever get to a place where we are all equal, no matter how hard we try, we will always over-correct.
