I Can’t Understand What You’re Saying

Brenda Ling,
Casper, WY.

I’ve lived in Wyoming four years now and no one has said this to me – knock on wood. Though someone tried to give me an order at a Chinese restaurant in Casper while I was waiting for my food. Some sales clerk in Wal-Mart in St. Cloud, Minnesota, said those six words to me when I asked for help in locating an item. She looked at my Chinese face and didn’t bother listening to what I had to say. She also laughed and looked at a nearby co-worker for confirmation about my inability to speak English. So, I repeated my request – annunciating each word and saying it slow and loud. Suddenly, the sales clerk could understand me and didn’t find the situation funny anymore.
