Heather Thompson,
San Francisco, CA.
While travelling to Mexico for one week, 5 separate people asked me if I was Cuban, 1 asked me if I was Portuguese (including one American!). I speak beginner-intermediate level spanish, but am Biracial (black, white, and a smidge of Native American). My white friend travelling with me was not asked once. To the rest of the world it seems, true Americans are only white. I love the level of ambiguity and transcendence that allows me to flow from identities, but sometimes I feel that I have no true identity. Its both lonely and inclusive.
