This was one of the nicer things said to my daughter at her church-ran private school, where she was the only white kid in her class. The girls would actually tell her that they couldn’t play with her because of her skin color. She asked, with tears in her eyes, why she had to “always be kind” to the other kids when they were always mean to her. Seven year olds can only learn this type of behavior from their families; we have to fix the attitudes at home, before we can expect change in society.
