“You really aren’t a real Mexican.”

Ai Lee Blankenship,
Lexington, NC

I come from a home that consists of a Deaf mother and father. My father is Italian/white while my mother is Mexican. Instead of learning both English and Spanish, I have learned English and American Sign Language in order to effectively communicate with my parents. I have always heard the statement, “You really aren’t a real Mexican,” because I live with my father’s side of the family and I don’t know much Spanish. I try my best every day to embrace my Mexican roots in the best ways that I know how – through learning more and more from others.
