A melting pot or mixing bowl?

Campbell Peters,
Catonsville, MD

“The U.S. is a melting pot.” All cultures, religions, ethnicities, and races combined to form our country. But are we really melted together? Systemic racism separates us all, whether it is intentional bias or accidental comments that have racial undertones, America is not a melting pot. Rather it’s a mixing bowl, where everything is mixed together but often not truly combined into one unified nation. Growing up in this type of society, makes me hope that the future generations can live up to the “melting pot” title and minimize the amount of racism and prejudice in our lives.
