Chicana Falsa I Am Not!

FullSizeRender-2Amber Nicole Gutierrez,
Hemet, CA.

Everyone grew up with a different life-style, just because I look of Mexican decent does not mean I am the same as every Mexican stereotype. I am an American and have grew up in the middle of both worlds of “American” and “Mexican”. I understand Spanish and speak some. I was not raised in the barrio it does not mean I do not know the culture. I may shout the word Loteria but it does not mean I do not know of the word buenas. I am as American as they come . My father served in military for a 20 years span, my mother was born here as her mom’s mom was. However, I do self-identify as a Chicana. This is due to the wonderful culture of Mexico and the Cesar Chavez Movement for civil rights and belief in higher education. I hope to assist minorities wherever disparities are found.

Like you, gingers do have souls.

Katelyn Nicole Volz

“You know they say Gingers have no souls right?” “A Ginger gains a freckle every time they steal a soul.” “Do the carpets match the drapes?” Does ANYONE know how tired I am of hearing that? Yes, my hair is red, yes it’s natural, and yes I am Irish. Does it really matter what my appearance says about me? I work hard, have a job, dress appropriately, and yes, I do have a soul. EVERY HUMAN DOES.

I am not a criminal, statistic, failure

James McCray,
Hemet, CA

I am not what society has labeled me. I am not a criminal because I am so called African American. I am not a statistic because I grew up in a single parent household, studies suggest that young black boys who grow up without a father in the home chances are he will get in trouble with the law at a early age, drop out of school and be defiant towards his mother, by the way I did not do any of these . I am not a failure I am not doing what my dad and step-mother expects from my life.

Yes!! My name means White in spanish!!

I grew up in a community that was composed of mostly white people. Every time someone would ask my name they would go on to say doesn’t that mean white? Yes! I would reply. Mostly likely laughs would follow and the oh so unique question of “why would your parents name you after a color? Those experiences made me ashamed of my name but as I got older I realized my name means White in Spanish and I love it!!-CBU HIS 311

Set an example/Be the Change

Amanda
Hemet, CA

I know how it feels to be judged only on the color of your skin. In 8th grade during the LA riots I went to school just like any other day. When I got there I was confronted by a large group of students who began yelling at me. This quickly escalated to having books and backpacks being thrown at me. I spent the day running from class to class and even had to hide in the bathroom at lunch. Why? Because I am white. These other students didn’t know anything about me. They only copied what they saw on television. We need to set a good example and be the change that we want to see.
