There’s only one and he’s nice.

These were my exact words upon arriving home from my first day of school ever. It was 1957; I was five, and my grandmother that lived with us had asked me if there were any “darkies” in my class. I realized at that moment that her racist brainwashing was hateful and from that day on I looked upon people with a more open mind. I taught school for 37 years and tried to treat all my students with respect and affection. I’m 61 years old now and remember that moment like it was yesterday.
