“When she sings, she sounds black!”

Shaley White
Hays, KS

This is something I’ve heard many times. I like to sing and I sing often for several different occasions and many times people will say, “you sound black when you sing”. One time, after I sang for a church event, a boy went up to one of my friends and asked who the girl was who was singing. My friend pointed to me and said, “That was Shaley.” The boy said, “No, the black girl that was singing.” I was the only singer that night. I admire many African American vocalists so I take it as a compliment but I do find it interesting that many of us associate particular vocal characteristics to certain races.
