Understanding Race Project- University of Michigan
After talking about diversity and race in our class, I have felt nothing but guilt when hearing about the inequalities and unfortunate circumstances of people of color or different races. I have become well aware that being white means being privileged. I feel guilty for this privilege because it is not something I earned. I was just born white. Born into a world in which I will never understand how it feels to be treated differently because of the color of my skin. Born into a world in which I will not be questioned when applying to a job or internship or followed by a salesperson in a store simply because I am white. I feel guilty that I have no experience in being discriminated against because of my skin color but many of my classmates at University of Michigan have.
