Melting-pot Melungeon: Not “Other!” Try “Most.”

Some of my ancestors went through a lot so that I could be “white” and not have to know about them as African, Native American, Eastern Mediterranean. Others who were considered white may not have been free. Some of my Celtic ancestors were forcibly resettled by the English. Others were captives of the Spanish. And some of them were the English, the Hessian mercenaries, the lowland Germans fleeing religious wars, the Native peoples of the Ohio Valley. My people have been in Appalachia for fourteen generations, some of them probably for much longer. Back in Jamestown days, people married where they could, and if they wanted freedom they went to the mountains.
